"Cinematic Marvel Universe» ( eng. "The Cinematic Marvel Universe» ; abbr. CME ) - a fictional universe , the American media franchise , a series of superhero films based on the comic book company Marvel and developed film company Marvel Studios . The universe was created by combining several films and TV shows with common actors, characters and events into a common storyline.
At the moment, twenty-three films have been released . The films Iron Man (2008), The Incredible Hulk (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2011), Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and Avengers (2012) are combined into the first phase . The films Iron Man 3 (2013), Thor 2: The Kingdom of Darkness (2013), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) and " ant-Man " (2015) in the second . "Captain America: Civil War (2016), Doctor Strange (2016), Guardians of the Galaxy. Part 2 ”(2017),“ Spider-Man: Homecoming ”(2017),“ Thor: Ragnarok ”(2017),“ Black Panther ”(2018),“ Avengers: Infinity War ”(2018),“ Ant-Man and the Wasp ”(2018),“ Captain Marvel ”(2019),“ Avengers: Final ”(2019) and“ Spider-Man: Away from Home ”(2019) in the third . The first three phases, in turn, are combined into the story arch "Infinity Saga." The premiere of the film " Black Widow " is scheduled for November 5, 2020.”, Which will begin the fourth phase and a new story arch.
TV series “ Agents of Shch.I.T. "(2013 - present), Agent Carter (2015-2016), Daredevil (2015-2018), Jessica Jones (2015-2019), Luke Cage (2016-2018), Iron fist ”(2017—2018),“ Defenders ”(2017),“ Supermen ”(2017),“ Punisher ”(2017—2019),“ Runaways ”(2017—2019),“ Cloak and Dagger ”(2018—2019) and the Marvel One-Shots short film series are also part of this universe. But directly with the events of the films of the cinema will only be associatedtelevision series Marvel Studios on the Disney + streaming service , the premiere of the first of which, Falcon and Winter Soldier , will take place in August 2020.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe ranks first in the list of the most profitable film series with total collections of more than $ 22.5 billion, and the films Avengers: Final , Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers occupy the first, fifth, and eighth places in the list of the most box office films in the history of cinema .
In each of the KVM films or television series, there are references to each other, which ultimately combines them into one universe. All other films and television series based on Marvel comics are in no way connected with this series, as they were shot by other companies and do not have a common storyline among themselves, although all these characters are from the same fictional universe in comics .
In 2005, Variety magazine announced that Marvel Studios would start producing its own films and distributing them through Paramount Pictures . Previously, the studio acted only as a co-producer in the film adaptations of the characters she invented (the most famous is the seven-year contract with 20th Century Fox ). The proceeds from these transactions, the management of Marvel decides to invest in its own generalized franchise , the creation process of which will be completely under the control of the studio. For this purpose, a revolving loan agreement was concluded for a period of 7 years with Merrill Lynch in the amount of $ 525 million [1] .
“It is both scary and fun. This is something that no one has ever done before, and it is thanks to this spirit of novelty that everyone takes this approach with enthusiasm. Other directors are not used to attracting already engaged actors from other films, to make bindings to certain storylines or places, but I think ... everyone eventually agreed to this and thought it was fun. Mainly because we invariably continue to assert: the film we are currently working on is above all. All our “bundles” are all fun and will also be very important if you want to. If fans want to look further and see a deeper connection - she will be there. There are several obvious “bundles” that, we hope, can be followed by the main audience. But ... the reasonaccording to which all the directors agreed to take part in this venture - that their films must be competitive in themselves. They need a fresh look, a unique tone, and the fact that they can be interconnected if the viewer wants to follow these tracks from bread crumbs is a bonus. ”
Original text (English) [show]- Kevin Feigi , production manager at Marvel Studios , on the structure of the common movie universe [2]
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feigi mentioned that it was proposed to name this series of films “Marvel Cinema Universe” [3] [4] , but chose a different term - “Marvel Cinematic Universe” [5] . The first films were distributed using Paramount Pictures and Universal Pictures . Starting in 2012, Walt Disney Pictures [6] became the distributor of films , by which time it had bought the company Marvel Entertainment , which became a division of The Walt Disney Company [7] .

In October 2012, after a legal victory over Joe Schuster’s estate for Superman rights , Warner Bros. Pictures announced that DC Comics superheroes such as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and other characters can finally come together on the big screen in the movie Justice League. It was assumed that the company would take the opposite approach to Marvel, releasing separate films for the characters after they appear in the combined film [105] . The release of Man from Steel in 2013 was supposed to be the beginning of a new shared universe for DC, “laying the foundation for the future release of films based on DC Comics” [106]. In 2014 Warner Bros. announced the release of films similar to Disney and Marvel, approving the dates of the films several years in advance [107] . In the same year, DC CEO Jeff Jones stated that there would be no crossover between the Strela and Flash television series and the DC cinematic universe [108] , later explaining that “we look at it as a multiverse . We have our television universe and our movie universe, but they all coexist. For us, creatively, it's about letting everyone make a better product, tell a better story, make a better world. ... It's just a different approach. " [109] .
Mentioning the first crossover of the DC universe, Batman vs. Superman: At the Dawn of Justice , in the context of KVM success reasons, Todd van der Werff noted: “Even those who have consistent directors like Christopher Nolan in the Dark Knight trilogy are actually trying to tell not long, but rather episodic stories, which may add up to the whole ... These franchises turn pale in comparison with the MCU when it comes to the complexity of the narrative, mostly telling the same story in films, with one set of characters. .. Something in the Civil War“, Especially compared to the much more awkward Batman vs. Superman, made me realize that Marvel is better at making big-screen TVs than anyone else ... Their innovation is to take the idea of how superhero comics are structured, and present it in the style of a television show ... Marvel always keeps the whole in sight, sometimes to the detriment of parts. That's why other superhero movies should not try to play the Marvel mega-franchise ... That explains why the recent efforts of other superhero movie makers are so far from Marvel, though Warner Bros. and produces more traditional films. Of course, Warner Bros. there is Zach Snyder working on many films ... But Snyder and Singer are primarily immersed in the cinema and in the way the movie stories were always told. " [110] .
After a low-key BvS reception by critics and fans in May 2016, Warner Bros. attempted to “correct the course” and instructed Jeff Jones and CEO John Berg to co-manage “genre streams” in an attempt to combine disparate elements of DC films and repeat Kevin Feigy’s success in KVM. As part of their new responsibilities, Berg and Jones were appointed producers of the Justice League film, in addition to Jones participating in other DC projects, such as the suicide squad post-production and the Batman solo movie [111] . After successful release " Wonder Woman"In June 2017, DC decided to start challenging the general nature of its films, and DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson said:" Our goal is to definitely move forward using continuity to make sure no plot contradicts the rest and doesn't make sense, but we we don’t insist on a common storyline for all the pictures or on their interconnections in the current universe ... Moving forward, you will see that the universal DC film is the universe, but one that comes from the heart of the director who creates it. "In addition, DC began focusing on film, "completely separated from the rest, completely out of the cinematic universe", the first of which - a solo picture of supervillain Joker . [112] .
In November 2012, 20th Century Fox announced plans to create its own shared universe, composed of Marvel characters, in which it has the rights to include the Fantastic Four and X-Men, while hiring Mark Millar as a controlling producer. Millar said: “Fox thinks:“ We are sitting on some really amazing things here. There is another side to the Marvel Universe. Let's try and get some cohesion. " So they made me think about it. To meet with writers and directors, to suggest new ways, we could take this material and new properties that could break out of it ” [113] . " X-Men: Days of Future Past”, Released in 2014, was Fox’s first step toward expanding their stable Marvel properties and creating this universe [114] before releasing the Fantastic Four reboot movie next year [115] . However, in May 2014, the screenwriter of Days of Future Past and Fantastic Four Simon Kinberg stated that the last film would not be held in the same universe as the X-Men films, explaining that “none of the X-Men films recognize this concept of their kind of superhero - Fantastic Four. And the Fantastic Four is gaining strength, so for them to live in a world dominated by mutants, it is quite difficult, because you look like: “Oh, you're just a mutant.” For example: “What is so fantastic about you?” ... they live in different universes ” [115] . In July 2015, X-Men director Brian Singer said that there is still potential for a crossover between the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises if the reaction to the Fantastic Four and X-Men Apocalypse justifies [116] .
Feeling that Singer’s efforts at Apocalypse to create a larger KVM-like world did not meet Marvel’s standards, Vanderwerf noted that, unlike Feigi’s ability to act as a “pseudo-showrunner,” Singer instead was “immersed in cinema ”and so“ when the time comes for the Apocalypse to match the plot streams from the earlier movie X-Men: First Class (which was directed by someone else completely), Singer director and screenwriter Simon Kinberg rely on battered devices and a clumsy storytelling ”, indicating the absence of“ such a large vision that requires this kind of mega-franchise ” [110] .
In November 2013, Amy Pascal of Sony Pictures Entertainment announced that the studio intends to expand its universe created by Mark Webb's New Spider-Man series, with side adventures to support the characters, in an attempt to reproduce the Marvel and Disney model [114] . The following month, Sony announced the films Venom and The Sinister Six , set in the New Spider-Man world. IGN called it “the latest example of what we can call the“ Avengers effect ”in Hollywood, as the studios work on creating universes of interconnected films” [117]. Sony decided not to replicate Marvel Studios, which combined solo characters into an ensemble film, instead making Spider-Man opponents the stars of future films [118] . However, in February 2015, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios announced that Spider-Man franchise would be restarted, and in July 2017, a new film by Faygi and Pascal integrated into KVM would be released. Sony Pictures will continue to fund, distribute, own and have ultimate creative control over Spider-Man films [119] . With this announcement, the sequels of New Spider-Man were canceled [120]and by November 2015, the films Venom and The Ominous Six, as well as individual projects based on female characters in the Spider-Man Universe, no longer moved forward [120] [121] . By March 2016, the Venom movie was turned into the beginning of its own franchise, not related to Spider-Man in KVM [122] . A year later, Sony officially announced the release of the film Venom on October 5, 2018 [123] along with a film dedicated to female characters, namely the Silver Sable and the Black Cat: Silver and Black . Both projects were not intended to participate in KVM or other projects for the movie Spider-Man: Homecoming , but rather for the alleged separate shared universe [124] [125] .
After Sony canceled its general plans for the universe and began to share the character with Spider-Man with Marvel Studios, many critics discussed their failure to replicate KVM. Scott Meslow of The Week noted the tangible shortcomings of the first film “The New Spider-Man ” beyond his leading speeches and how the sequel “doubles on all errors of the original, adding a few of his own ... Now we have an example of a tutorial on how not to reset the superhero franchise, and if Sony and Marvel are wise, they will take into account almost all of these lessons when drawing up the next course of Spider-Man ” [126]. Scott Mendelssohn noted that New Spider-Man “was put up more like a pilot backdoor for the film“ Spider-Man vs. the Sinister Six ”than a sequel ...” If Sony adhered to the original plan for the shortened franchise of superheroes, leaving an entrenched romantic drama, then, by at least they would stand out in a crowded field of superheroes. When every superhero movie gets bigger, The New Spider-Man could be intimate. This would save Sony a “boat of money” and potentially change the relative financial breakdown of the film [127] .
In 2013, Sarik Andreasyan had an idea to make his own film about Russian superheroes , inspired by the film “ Avengers ” [128] , and the studio “ Enjoy Movies ” planned on the basis of this film to create its own franchise in order to add new superheroes with each new film in the future [129] . After negative reviews of the film [130] and the box office failure [131] [132] [133] the continuation of the film was postponed indefinitely [134] [135] .
Universal Studios , also inspired by the success of Cinematographic Marvel universe, decided to create their kinovselennuyu called Dark Universe , which will be based on the classic series Universal Monsters [136] and which will include all restarted movies from a series of classic monster movies, including " Frankenstein " , “ Dracula ”, “The Wolfman ”, “The Beast from the Black Lagoon ”, “The Invisible Man ”, “The Frankenstein Bride ” and “The Mummy ”. Initially, the first film for the starting point of this universe was to be Dracula 2014, but after negative reviews, it was decided not to include this film in the Dark Universe. The next attempt to create a movie universe of monsters was the film " The Mummy " with Tom Cruise in the lead role [137] [138] . Unfortunately, the Mummy remake, like the Dracula remake, received negative reviews and was nominated for several Golden Raspberry Awards [139] [140] [141] . The further fate of the Dark Universe remains in doubt.
After the release of the movie “ Avengers ” in May 2012, Tom Russo of Boston.com noted that in addition to the random “news”, such as “ Alien vs. Predator ” (2004), in Hollywood the idea of a common universe was practically unheard of [142]. Since that time, the model of the universal universe created by Marvel Studios began to be replicated by other movie studios that retained rights to other comic book characters. In April 2014, Standard & Poor's Information Technology Analyst Tun Amobi said that in the previous 3-5 years, Hollywood studios will begin to plan “megafranchises” for years to come, opposing the work of one blockbuster at a time. Amobi added: “Many of these superheroes were simply left there to collect dust. Disney proved that this [approach and genre] can be a gold mine ” [118]. However, with additional studios now playing mega franchises, Doug Kreutz, a media analyst at Cowen and Company, feels that the temptation will eventually die for viewers: “If Marvel is going to make two or three films a year, and Warner Brothers is going to at least make a film every year, and Sony is going to make a film every year, and Fox [is going to] make a film every year, can everyone do well in this scenario? I’m not sure that they will be able to ” [118] .
In September 2014, the University of Baltimore announced a course beginning in the spring semester of 2015, revolving around the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which will be taught by Arnold T. Bloomberg. «Media Genres: Media Marvels» explores, "as a series of interrelated movies and TV shows Marvel, as well as associated media, and comics sources and monomyth Joseph Campbell's " Hero's Journey "offers valuable information about contemporary culture", as well as efforts Marvel , create a viable universe of storylines, characters, and backstories [143] .
