" Game of Thrones " ( Engl.  The Game of Thrones ) - American television series in the genre of fantasy , based on a cycle of novels " A Song of Ice and Fire " by George RR Martin . Filmed under the supervision of David Benioff and D. B. Weiss for the HBO cable channel . Filming was conducted in several countries, including the United Kingdom ( Northern Ireland ), Malta , Croatia , Iceland and Morocco . The first season premiered in the USA on April 17, 2011., the last episode of the final season was shown on May 19, 2019 [3] [4] .

The action of the Game of Thrones takes place in a fictional world reminiscent of medieval Europe . In the series, many characters act simultaneously and several storylines develop . There are three main plot arches : the first is devoted to the struggle of several influential houses for the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms or for independence from it; the second - to the descendant of the overthrown dynasty of rulers, the exiled princess who plans to return to the throne; the third - to the ancient brotherhood, protecting the state from threats from the north.

The series is characterized by the absence of strictly positive characters, many heroes commit ambiguous acts and may die on the screen unexpectedly for the viewer [5] . In the series there are fantastic creatures - dragons and undead . Especially for the series, artificial languages were developed : Dothraki , high Valyrian and several of its dialects.

The television series received high reviews from the viewers, becoming one of the largest budget projects on modern American television and the most expensive in the fantasy genre, despite the fact that many critics considered the amount of profanity, naturalistic murder scenes, erotic scenes and sexual hints excessive. Around the Game of Thrones an extensive fan community has sprung up . The series has been awarded many prestigious awards, including 38 prime time Emmy awards in various nominations, three Hugo awards for best performance , and Peabody Prizes . Peter Dinklidge , who performed the role of Tyrion Lannister , four times awardedEmmy Award for Best Supporting Actor and Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor .

The plot is based on a series of novels by George Martin " Song of Ice and Fire ." Each book of heptalogy  - of the seven planned seven books published at the beginning of 2019 - corresponds to one season, but the third novel, “The Storm of Swords”,  is divided into 2 seasons, the third and fourth [6] . The fourth and fifth novels - “ Feast of the Vultures ” and “ Dance with the Dragons ” - are the basis of the fifth season. The sixth novel - “ Winds of Winter ” - is divided into 2 seasons, the sixth and seventh [7] [8] . The final seventh novel - " Dreams of Spring " - is also divided into 2 seasons, the seventh and eighth [9] [10][11] . The novel "The Winds of Winter" is not complete and may be published in 2020 [12] [13] [14] . Dreams of Spring will be released a few years after the release of The Wind of Winter [15] [16] [17] .

The first season is an exact adaptation of the first novel of the series. Starting from the second season, differences from books appear, and from the fifth season the storylines of the series differ significantly from the books [18] [19] [20] . According to David Benioff, “the main task is to adapt the book series as a whole, to stick to the map set by George, to reflect the main milestones, but not necessarily every stopover. This is adaptation, she will have to adapt in order to survive. There will always be those who want everything to remain exactly as in books. For us, this is not an option initially ” [21] .

History of Creation

Background

The first proposal for the sale of film rights George Martin received 1-2 months after the release of the first novel of the series, " Game of Thrones " [26] ; suggestions continued to come as new books and their popularity grew. The commercial success of the film adaptations in the fantasy genre , especially the film “ The Lord of the Rings ” by Peter Jackson, also played its role [27] . Nevertheless, the writer for a long time was rather skeptical about the possible screen version of his works, considering them too long for film adaptation and too different from the standards of the television series [28] ; Martin Martin’s experience as a screenwriter and producer in the 1980s and 1990s contributed to this attitude [29].

In January 2007, the HBO cable channel acquired the rights to the screen version of the series [30] . The first and second draft scenarios of the pilot episode were presented in August 2007 [31] and in June 2008, respectively [32] and were approved by HBO [33] [34] . In September 2008, HBO secured the rights to the series, but the project was given the green light only in November [35] [36] . Almost immediately, a pilot synopsis appeared on the network, followed by the full script [37] .

Preparing for the shoot

The scriptwriters and executive producers of the project, in addition to Martin himself, were David Benioff and D. B. Weiss . It was assumed that they will be screenwriters of all episodes, except for one in each season, the script of which is written by Martin himself [30] [38] . However, in the future, Jane Aspenson and Brian Cogman joined the scriptwriting team , writing one script for the first season [39] .

Project Features

David Benioff described the Game of Thrones as the “ Soprano Clan in Middle-earth, ” emphasizing the general dark atmosphere of the series and the intricacies of complex intrigues, in which the fantasy element is more of an addition [41] . Michael Lombardo, spokesman for HBO, believes the story itself is more attractive than magic or an exotic setting.

Casting

On May 5, 2009, it was announced that Peter Dinklidge had signed a contract for the role of Tyrion Lannister in the pilot series [42] . After some time, unknown persons edited the profile of actress Holly Marie Combs on the IMDB website , “nominating” her for the role of Katilyn Stark ; Benioff and Weiss stated that it was a hoax [43] . In early August 2009, it was officially announced that the role of Katilin went to Jennifer El [44] .

At the end of July 2009, many names of actors invited to participate in the series were announced, including Sean Bean (Eddard Stark) [45] , Keith Harington (John Snow), Jack Gleason (Joffrey Baratheon), Harry Lloyd (Viserys Targaryen) and Mark Eddie (Robert Baratheon) [45] [46] . On August 20, it was additionally announced that Nikolai Koster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), Emilia Clark (Daenerys Targaryen), Richard Madden (Robb Stark), Ian Glen (Jorah Mormont), Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy),Macy Williams (Arya Stark), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) [47] . On September 1, information appeared that Lina Headey would play Cersei Lannister [48] . On September 23, Martin confirmed that Rory McCann would play Sandor Cleagan [49] . October 11, it was confirmed that Jason Momoa plays Khal Drogo, and three days later - that Isaac Hempstead-Wright play Bran Stark [50] .

Filming

Filming the pilot episode took almost a month, from October 24 [51] to November 19, 2009 [52] . Shortly after the filming was over, it became known that actress Jennifer El (Katileen Stark) will be replaced by Michelle Fairley , and Tamzin Merchant (Daenerys Targaryen) will be replaced by Emilia Clark. It took several scenes to be re-shot, including the prologue, and due to overlays in the schedule, not all actors were able to return to the shoot, which entailed the replacement of three more actors. Director Thomas McCarthy was also unable to return to re-filming and was replaced, his name is not mentioned in the credits.

On March 2, 2010, HBO confirmed that the first season would be removed. On July 26, 2010 [53] in Northern Ireland, filming of 9 episodes began, which ended in mid-December (15th or 16th according to various sources) [54] [55] . In June 2012, shots of 10 episodes appeared on the Internet, in which one of the severed heads resembles George W. Bush . HBO reacted to the scandal with an apology, announcing that the scene with severed heads would be edited when released on DVD. As explained by David Benioff, the creators simply used artificial heads that they could get [56] [57] [58] .

David Benioff and D. B. Weiss from the very beginning intended to film the entire series of “A Song of Ice and Fire” if HBO would give them such an opportunity. According to their calculations, the material of the books is enough to create a series of 80 watch episodes, or eight 10-episode seasons [59] . Benioff and Weiss emphasized that they did not intend to postpone the last seasons for several years until George R. R. Martin finished the last books. At the beginning of 2018, out of the planned seven novels, only five were published, and work on the latter, “Dance with the Dragons," took six years. The writer told Benioff and Weiss the planned plots of unfinished books and the intended ending, including in case he dies before he can finish the series [60]. The producers admit, although they consider it undesirable, that the television series will end before the last book is published [61] .

In March 2015, Benioff and Weiss stated that the fifth season is based on the latest published books of the cycle, so starting from the sixth season there will be serious differences from the planned books in the series, however, the endings of the storylines will be approximately the same [62] . In August of the same year, George R. R. Martin stated that, most likely, he would no longer write a single script for the Game of Thrones, as he needed to focus on completing the cycle [63] .

On March 13, 2014, information appeared that Benioff and Weiss know the fate of almost all the characters and plan to complete the series with the seventh season [64] [65] , but in July 2015, executive producer Michael Lombardo announced that the series would end with the eighth season [66] [67] . In a January 2016 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lombardo announced that HBO would extend the series to the seventh and eighth seasons, while the last season would not be expanded to 12 or 13 episodes (as George Martin originally believed, since the third, fifth, sixth and seventh books on more than the rest) [68] or is divided into two parts, like the “ Soprano Clan ” or the AMC seriesBreaking Bad ”and“ Mad Men[69] .

On May 26, 2019, the premiere of a two-hour documentary on how the final season of Game of Thrones was created [70] will take place .

Screening schedule

Two days after the premiere of the first season , on April 19, 2011, it was announced that the series would be extended to the second season [71] . Casting began in May 2011 [72] . The broadcast of the season in the United States began on April 1, 2012 [73] .

April 11, 2012 from the personal blog of George Martin, it became known about the extension of the series for the third season [74] . The premiere was scheduled for March 31, 2013 [75] .

On April 2, 2013, the series was extended for the fourth season [76] . The premiere took place on April 6, 2014.

On April 8, 2014, the series was extended for the fifth and sixth seasons. The premiere of the fifth season took place on April 12, 2015 [77] , and the sixth on April 24, 2016.

On April 21, 2016, the series was extended for the seventh season [78] [79] . On June 1, 2016, Jack Bender (director of episodes 5 and 6 of the sixth season) reported that the seventh season, unlike the previous ones, consists of 7 episodes instead of 10 [80] [81] . The premiere took place on July 16, 2017.

On July 30, 2016, it was announced that the series would be extended to the last eighth season [82] . On April 14, 2016, David Benioff and Dan Weiss said in an interview with Variety that only 13 episodes were planned for the last two seasons. Since there are 7 episodes in the seventh season, the eighth will consist of 6 episodes [83] [84] , which Benioff and Weiss confirmed in March 2017 [85] . On July 25, 2018, HBO President Casey Bloys announced that the final season would premiere in the first half of 2019 [86] . On November 13, 2018, it was announced on the series’s official Twitter page that the premiere of the 8th season would be in April 2019 [87] .

Although the series is American , the vast majority of the actors employed in it are subjects of Great Britain or Ireland . Many characters speak with accents characteristic of different areas of the British Isles [148] . The characters from Westeros speak British English , and their reprimand is often characteristic of the region of England, which geographically correlates with the corresponding region of Westeros. So, Eddard Stark, a native of the North, speaks with an accent characteristic of the north of England, while Southerner Tywin Lannister speaks with an accent typical of the inhabitants of the English south. Actors playing foreign characters speak with “foreign” accents, real or simulated[149] . The inconsistency of this approach has been criticized by British viewers, including professional linguists: in the series, even members of the same family can speak different versions of English. Anthony Grant, professor of historical linguistics from the University of Edgehill , Named shown in the series set a hodgepodge of accents ( Eng.  A mish-mash ) and laid the blame on American producers [150] .

The series contains dialogues in artificial languages , foreign to Westeros - Dothraki and various dialects of Valyrian . The HBO channel hired the American linguist David Peterson [151] , who developed a vocabulary, phonetic and grammatical structure for each language [152] . According to Peterson, as of September 2011, there were over 3 thousand words in the pre-Thracian language [153] . Dialogues in the pre-Thracian and Valyrian languages are accompanied by forced subtitles. According to the BBC , the number of people who heard these languages while watching the series exceeds the number of people who heard Welsh ,Irish and Scottish Gaelic combined [154] .

Costumes

Michelle Clapton was a costume designer for the first five seasons before being replaced by April Ferry . [ 113 ] Clapton returned to the show as a costume designer of the seventh season. [ 114 ].

The costumes used in this series came as a result of inspiration from a number of sources, such as Japanese and Persian armor. The Dothraki dress is similar to the Bedouin one (it was made from a fish skin resembling a dragon's scale), and savages wear animal skins like Inuit. [ 115 ] The bone armor of the feral is made of mold, real bones, ropes and latex. Although the extras, which played wild and sentinels, usually wore hats (which is normal in a cold climate), the main characters did not. So the viewer could always distinguish them in a crowd of characters.

All used clothing is aged for two weeks, so it seems realistic on high-definition televisions [ 116 ].

About two dozen wigs are used for actresses. Made from human hair up to 61 cm long, they cost up to $ 7,000 each, are washed and styled like real hair. Putting a wig takes a lot of time: Emilia Clark, for example, takes about two hours to turn her dark hair into a platinum blonde with braids. Other actors, such as Jack Gleason and Sophie Turner, often undergo hair dyeing. For characters such as Daenerys (Clark) and her Dothraki, their hair, wigs and costumes are treated as if they had not been washed for several weeks [ 115 ].

Reviews and criticism

“Game of Thrones” became an object of close attention from fans of the saga at the production stage [155] [156] . She was mentioned in the lists of the most anticipated television series of 2011, published in late 2010 - early 2011 by a number of reputable media specializing in coverage of the entertainment industry [157] [158] .

Columnist Tim Goodman from Hollywood Reporter magazine praised the first episode of the series, noting the fascination of the plot, the high quality of the script, acting and visual effects. [159] . The journalist of the British newspaper Guardian Felim O'Neill noted that the series “looks almost like a [movie] movie” and “gets better and better with every episode.” Time reviewer James Ponivozik called the film adaptation an “epic victory” and noted with satisfaction its “maturity” [160] . Positive was the review of the magazine " Fantasy World "": According to observer Sergei Kovalev, the series is" a worthy embodiment of one of the best examples of epic fantasy "; The magazine especially praised the successful casting, but noted that the budget did not allow the scenes to be fully transmitted [161] .

The Metacritic website received positive reviews: the first season - 80% [162] , the second season - 90% [163] , the third season - 91% [164] , the fourth season - 94% [165] , the fifth season - 91% [166 ] , the sixth season - 73% [167] , the seventh season - 77% [168] , the eighth season - 74% [169] .

The Rotten Tomatoes website received positive reviews: the first season - 89% [170] , the second season - 96% [171] , the third season - 97% [172] , the fourth season - 97% [173] , the fifth season - 95% [ 174] , the sixth season - 96% [175] , the eighth season - 58% [176] .

Cadets of military schools in Turkey in the autumn of 2014 were forbidden to watch this series in order to protect them “from sexual exploitation, pornography, exhibitionism, violence, harassment and other negative behavior” [177] .
